Abstract:

A suite of emerging measurement technologies in biology, and elsewhere, provide an unprecedented ability to measure individual components of complex systems. DNA microarrays, mass spectrometry, raman spectrometry, and blotting techniques, share the characteristics of making sometimes highly multivariate measurements, but are limited in that only "relative intensity" is measured, typically in arbitrary units. A further complication is that nuisance sources of variation are frequently present, and these sources make interpretation of the measurements difficult. We have developed a metric that may be used to evaluate commonly used methods used to normalize these types of data. This metric can be viewed as extension of widely used statistical techniques and is base on the Box-Cox method of transformations.
