Keywords: classification and regression trees ; interactive graphics ; exploratory model analysis
Abstract:

Tree models offer an attractive way to anayze relationships between variables and to communicate findings to non-specialists. Many methods improve the prediction power of tree models by growing multiple trees and averaging over the individual predictions, which leads to a loss of interpretability. We have developed a software for visualization and analysis of trees, KLIMT, which allows us to analyze multile tree models in parallel. The program has close links with R and is written in Java for reasons of portability. We will show the interactive features of the program in applications to real data sets, illustrating in particular, how such features can help to extract additional information about the underlying data from a forest of tree models.
