Abstract:

Research problems faced by the Statistical Sciences Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) challenge existing statistical methods and practices. For example, certifying the reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile is an extremely large problem, the relationships between the problem components are highly complex, the "client" is a large multi-isciplinary community, and information that must be considered goes beyond traditional experimental data, including computer model output, expert judgment, and historical data on similar systems. Consequently, a team of qualitative researchers has been assembled to help characterize, define, and map these complex research problems, so that statistical methods can be applied effectively. The Knowledge Modeling and Istudies, rhetoric, artificial intelligence, and computer science to "study" the research problem and the group that owns it in ways that better incorporate the clients' needs into the statistical models. This paper will discuss several collaborative projects between LANL statisticians and the Knowledge Modeling and Integration Team.
