Abstract:

Comparing the relative variability of several populations has been a topic of interest for many scientists. Consider a situation in which measurements (such as head length) are collected from several populations of alligators that may differ with respect to age, species, or habitats. To compare the populations based on measures of absolute variation, such as the standard deviation, may not be appropriate if the populations differ vastly in size or scale of measurement. Instead, the researcher may be interested in a measure of relative variability, such as the coefficient of variation. Several different statistics to test for the equality of coefficents of variation have been suggested and compared in the literature. When the hypothesis of equal coefficients of variation is rejected, the investigator may wish to identify which coefficients of variation are different from the rest. We investigate some appropriate methods of multiple comparisons of all possible coefficients of variation. We compare the performances of the various methods based on the powers and experimentwise error rates via simulation. The methods are applied to a problem arising from biology.
