Abstract:

Parametric modeling of mortality data is necessary in many practical demographical problems. Two examples are apparent in building U.S. life tables. The first is that parametric models can help smoothing some tables with incomplete data, such as some state tables and some demographical minorities. The second is that biologically interpretable models accounting for the characteristic age patterns of mortalities will help comparisons of mortalities between death groups, between demographic groups and between countries, therefore introducing further research related to mortality. Based on data from death certificates filed in state vital statistics offices and reported to NCHS through the National Vital Statistics System to construct two decennial (1989-1991 and 1999-2001) U.S. life tables, this study compares several parametric mortality laws published around the world, and searches for best fits in demographic groups by revising exiting models. The results from this study will be used in practice of constructing new U.S. life tables.
