Abstract:

The space-time scan statistic is currently being used for daily disease surveillance for the early detection of disease outbreaks in New York City and other places. Data sources used include ambulance dispatch data, emergency room visits, pharmacy sales, and spontaneous reports from the public. Using a variety of simulated disease outbreak models, we evaluate the power of the space-time scan statistic to detect an outbreak in a timely manner.
