Abstract:

Surveys frequently have questions that ask "pick any" or "choose all that apply" from a set of responses. Variables that summarize this type of data are called both pick any/c variables and multiple-response categorical variables. The purpose of this research is to develop and investigate model-based procedures to test for marginal independence between these multiple-response categorical variables. These procedures include generalized loglinear, alternating logistic regression, and multivariate binomial logit-normal models. Follow-up methods are proposed to investigate deviations from marginal independence if they occur. Model convergence problems are discussed and a simulation study is performed to determine which procedures hold the correct size under a variety of different settings.
