Abstract #300473

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

Modeling diagnostic error without a gold standard hs been an active area of biostatistical research. This talk discusses an inherent problem with these approaches. Namely, we show that when the conditional dependence between tests is misspecified, estimators of sensitivity and specificity can be asymptotically biased. Further, we demonstrate that, with small numbers of tests, likelihood comparisons to distinguish between different classes of models that specify different types of dependence structures may not identify the appropriate model.
