Abstract:

When studying the effect of a risk factor in survival analysis, we sometimes know whether the risk factor is positively or negatively associated with the hazard rate. For example, in our mother-to-child HIV transmission study, both delivery and breastfeeding increase the hazard rate of HIV infection for infants of HIV-positive mothers.We proposed nonparametric estimators of the difference of the two cumulative hazard functions. In the discrete case, restricted maximum likelihood estimates are derived using the constrained nonlinear optimization method. In the continuous case, two nonparametric estimators are proposed, denoted as the upper bound H1 and the lower bound H2. We showed that any process within this band is uniformly consistent and, upon proper normalization, converges weakly to a Gaussian process.
