Abstract:

The Workshop on Statistical Methods in Software Engineering for Defense Systems (2001) continued a series of collaborative work between the Committee on National Statistics and the Department of Defense. The workshop brought together experts in statistics and software engineering, and examined three areas in which statistical methods in software engineering could provide benefits over current practice in defense software system development. These areas were: (1) methods for specification of requirements, including software cost reduction and sequence-based specification; (2) model-based testing methods, including combinatorial design methods and Markov chain usage-based testing; and (3) performance measurement. Examples relevant to these three areas will be presented along with associated recommendations for future work.
