Abstract:

The National Academy of Sciences was established in 1863 during President Lincoln's term to advise the nation on any matter of science or the arts. It succeeded in its mission and has now evolved to serve as advisors to the nation in science, engineering, and medicine. A brief history of The National Academies, and its Committee on National Statistics is given, followed by a description of its unique study process.
