The identification of a coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) prompted an intensive effort to characterize the unusual virus by determining the complete nucleotide sequence of the viral genome. The aims of this effort included a characterization of the individual viral genes, and possibly, to gain insights into the evolutionary origins of this new human pathogen. The sequence of SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) was compared to those from representative members of each of the three previously recognized groups of coronaviruses. The sequences of individual viral genes were compared to all proteins in the publicly available sequence databases. The initial analyses, using several different approaches, all indicated that SARS-CoV is not closely related to any of the previously characterized coronaviruses, but did not yield any obvious clues as to its evolutionary origin or unusual pathogenicity.
