Abstract:

Connecting statistical computing environments to other software is essential so that we can a) utilize software from other fields, and b) make statistical methodology easily accessible to others. I'll present some of the approaches we have pursued in the Omegahat project in connecting S to different programming languages and applications. These include general connections to, for example, Java, Perl, Python, SQL and Octave, GUI toolkits, databases, and spreadsheets, and to arbitrary COM applications such as Excel as both a client and a server. I'll describe the basic idea of the model underlying these bidirectional symmetric interfaces that allow users to transparently access functionality in the other system. And I'll mention a mechanism that can programmatically generate an interface to C/C++ code.
