Abstract:

A portion of Deming's work in survey sampling and errors-in-variables is reviewed. His perspective as a statistical consultant and his emphasis on the objectives of the survey, particularly as a basis for action, are discussed. Deming's distinction between enumerative and analytic studies and his illustration of the differences using the production process are presented. Recent research in some of Deming's areas of interest is briefly examined.
