Title: A Partial Proportional Odds Model on Income Mobility

Abstract:

Proportional odds model has been widely used to model ordinal outcomes. But the proportional odds assumption may not be valid in some cases. We propose a partial proportional odds model where the coefficients are allowed to vary across different categories depending on the PO assumption. The PO assumption for a particular variable can be tested by performing a likelihood ratio test based on two nested models. It is shown that this model is equivalent to a system of models with binary outcomes and therefore can be readily estimated via Generalized Estimating Equations. However, this model has not drawn enough attention among social scientists although it applies for a variety of subjects such as two-sex model, income mobility table, change of health status. An example studying income mobility is given to illustrate this model. Furthermore, we will compare this model with Leo Goldman's multiplicative model.
