Title: Teaching Introductory Statistics in the Behavioral Sciences--Approach and Rationale

Abstract:

Introductory statistics in psychology continues to generate much debate on content and pedagogy. Facilitating change where appropriate necessitates an understanding of instructors' motivation for their approach. This pilot study explored approaches (concept/calculation) to teaching introductory statistics, and associated rationale. A survey was conducted via two email lists (ALLSTAT and SRMSNET). There were 43 responses. Rationale for teaching approach was reported as open-ended information, and thematic analysis was conducted. Emphasis on concept, calculation and both were reported by 30 (70%), 4 (9%), and 9 (21%) respectively. Justification included: availability of computers, learning theory, students will become consumers rather than producers of statistical information, and calculation is rule-based which leads to better grasp of the subject. Research on factors that influence the content and teaching methods of introductory statistics should be viewed as a priority. This is fundamental to identifying best practices and facilitating a meaningful approach with scientific basis. Limitations of this study must be considered.
