Title: Choice of Number of Observations in Experiments with Repeated Measures

Abstract:

Problems associated with the analysis of repeated measures data are well-known. Many methods for analyzing data collected over time have been developed, including modeling of covariance structures using mixed-model statistical software. However the design question of how many times a single variable on the same experimental unit should be measured is often a question not considered when experiments are designed. The objective of this paper is to identify factors that are important when the response of an experimental unit is measured over time. Results of actual experiments will be presented along with an analysis of how the information in the experiments changes with increasing number of time points. A conclusion is reached that in repeated measures experiments the number of time points can often be reduced with little loss of information. This reduction in total number of observations can result in substantial time and money required to complete the experiment.
