Abstract:

Through the support of a grant awarded by the Center for Teaching Excellence at Virginia Commonwealth University, we have developed a "writing intensive" course for the Department of Statistical Sciences and Operations Research.  Surveys of students, faculty, and industry professionals have helped us to identify deficient areas in student communication as it pertains to writing in statistics and operations research.  We will discuss the results of these surveys and present our general course plan.  Our approach aims not only to correct student deficiencies, but also to train students in the fundamentals of professional writing. Examples of course content include writing executive summaries, conducting literature reviews, presenting case studies, and communicating in a professional manner. We anticipate that this course will provide students with crucial skills for academic and professional success.
