Abstract:

Visual analog scale is widely used in the postsurgical pain assessment. The pain intensity is measured and recorded as an integer in the unit of either centimeter or millimeter. Even though the same intensity is more accurately assessed when it is in the unit of millimeter, a value reported in the unit of centimeter is commonly seen in the medical literature. How the accuracy of a measurement affects the result of comparison in pain assessment between two groups in a surgical clinical trial is of interest. This simulation study was conduct to evaluate the impact from different levels of measurement accuracy on the results of hypothesis testing. The main outcome is the Type I error from performing the Student's t-test. Combinations of sample size and the distribution of pain intensity were considered. When the pain intensity follows a normal distribution, the preliminary results show that the probabilities of having the Type I errors are similar between these two levels of measurement accuracy under most of the conditions.
