Abstract:

When a sample design uses stratification, surprisingly low effective sample sizes can sometimes be obtained for population estimates. The National Tragedy Study implemented a stratified RDD design, dividing the U.S. into four strata. The effective sample size for its national estimates did not come close to the summation of the effective sample sizes for the within-strata estimates. This presentation will identify the reasons for this nonadditive property of the effective sample sizes and discuss the lessons that can be applied to stratified designs in general.
