Abstract:

The method of univariate population partitioning is an environmental statistics approach developed for dividing a sample of chemical concentration values into several subsamples, such that the probability distributions of each of the subsamples follow a normal distribution. Univariate population partitioning has been used for determining number of samples for future sampling at contaminated sites, and also for making remediation decisions. This method has also been applied to groundwater geochemistry data in order to identify subpopulations of samples within a study region. In this paper, we will extend the method of population partitioning for the multivariate case, and present the multivariate population partitioning of groundwater geochemistry data as an example.
