Abstract #302162

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: Binning in Density Estimation

Keywords: density estimation ; approximate sufficiency
Abstract:

There are many algorithms for estimating densities of iid observations which rely on pre-binning the data in order to reap computational benefits. Considering the result of binning continuous data into a large number of bins from the point view of Le Cam's approximate sufficiency leads to a couple of interesting conclusions. These theoretical results bound the increase in risk associated with binning as a function of the number of bins and the assumed smoothness of the possible densities. The analysis also suggests a sort of continuity correction that may lead to improvement of certain estimators especially in considering the estimation of differentiable densities.
