Abstract - #302116
Title: Resampling for Teaching Statistics
Author(s): Tim Hesterberg*+
Companies: Insighful Corporation
Address: Suite 500, Seattle, WA, 98109-3012,
Keywords: bootstrap ; permutation test
Abstract:

Students could dramatically improve their understanding of statistical concepts such as sampling variability, standard errors, and p values, by experiencing the variability for themselves, using bootstrapping and permutation tests. We'll show: (1) a supplemental chapter, "Bootstrap Methods and Permutation Tests," that has students do this, and (2) S-PLUS software for resampling, with a menu-driven interface easy enough for introductory statistics students. Coauthors of the chapter are Shaun Monaghan, David S. Moore, Ashley Clipson, and Rachel Epstein. This will be sold by W. H. Freeman for $7 (or less when connected to another textbook order). The S-PLUS software is free, and there is a free student version of S-PLUS. For further information see www.insightful.com/Hesterberg/bootstrap.
