Abstract - #302101
Title: Using Permutation Tests as a Basis for a Nonparametric Methods Course
Author(s): Michael D. Ernst*+
Companies: Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
Address: Dept. of Mathematical Sciences, Indianapolis, IN, 46202-3217,
Keywords: exact tests ; permutation distribution ; rank tests
Abstract:

Methods for teaching a course in nonparametric methods are discussed that utilize the permutation distribution of the data to motivate the construction of an exact sampling distribution of a statistic. Once this general method is understood, it is easily transferred to many other statistics or designs. Students are encouraged to calculate (or simulate) the exact distributions of statistics rather than rely on tabled values of the distribution or a normal approximation.
