Abstract:

In line with the recent revision of the medical curriculum at the Louisiana State University in Shreveport to incorporate a module focusing on "The Patient, Physician and Society" (module 3), the combined biostatistics and epidemiology course was restructured within this module so students can better appreciate its relevance to research and the practice of medicine; in particular, its application to clinical reasoning and problem solving. The materials of the old course are now staggered over the first two years culminating in a second year student project on evidence-based medicine. The focus, content, and methods of instruction for the restructured course and our initial two-year experience with it are described.
