Abstract #302078

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

Taxonomies are often imposed by either a group of experts or a company. Unfortunately, as a consequence, they are often very foreign to the end user and remain often unused. So, we take the approach of letting an individual decide for himself and automate the necessary tasks for him. In that situation, purely data-driven solutions are bound to fail as they do not take into account user preferences. Model-based clustering techniques have the potential for the necessary compromise between optimal classification and user constraints. In this presentation, we present how to adapt model based clustering techinques to user needs.
