Abstract:

Conventional multivariate discriminant/regression methods are based on the generalized linear model. Data are considered points in an Euclidian space and dimensionality is reduced by assuming a functional relationship between variables. This approach may have shortcomings when applied to real-world data where relative importance, functional relationship, and correlation among the variables are unknown. Still, variables can often be assumed to be "oriented", i.e., if all other variables are held constant, an increase is either "good" or "bad". The first approach for multivariate ordinal data, while eminently useful lacked computational efficiency. We now present a more efficient approach--o(n^2) vs. o(n!)--using u-statistics rather than the marginal likelihood. We apply this approach to correlating activity of anti-inflammatory drugs along genomic pathways with disease severity of psoriasis based on both clinical and histological parameters.
