Title: ColorBrewer in GeoVISTA Studio: Java-Based Visualization of Multivariate Geospatial Data

Abstract:

Color schemes play a critical role in displaying the patterns within multivariate data in geovisualization environments. Varied choices for single-variable color schemes are available using ColorBrewer (www.colorbrewer.org). This flash-based online tool allows users to select good color schemes for maps and other data-rich graphics. ColorBrewer has been recreated with Java in GeoVISTA Studio to use these colors in a visualization environment. Single-variable multicolor schemes for representing sequential, diverging, and qualitative data are thus available in Studio. ColorBrewer in Studio has also been extended to represent two-variable data, such as comparison of housing and income distributions. Studio presents a set of scheme choices for each two-variable combination, such as sequential-qualitative or diverging-diverging. The schemes are constructed by sampling surfaces within a perceptually scaled 3D color space. Each of the schemes can be flexibly adjusted to different numbers of classes for each variable. For example, Studio can present ownership and rental as two qualitative classes (categories of predominant housing tenure) with four sequential classes for median income.
