Title: Governmental Uses of Homeless Data: Implications for National Data Collection Efforts
Author(s): Paul Dornan*+

Address: 451 7th Street, SW, Washington, DC, 20410,
Keywords: homeless ; management ; information ; system
Abstract:

One consideration in shaping future national data collection efforts related to homelessness is how governments have used and will use such information. The basic questions are: What information on homelessness do governments need to know, how do they use it, and how should they get it? Governmental agencies potentially can employ homeless data to support changes in levels of funding; modify program/policy mixes; set norms for funding decisions; monitor and manage performance; and support research. This presentation will survey some of the ways one federal agency, HUD, and select state and local governments have so far used and might use homeless data and draw some implications for the way national data collection efforts might proceed.
