Title: A Package for the Statistical Analysis of Spatial Point Patterns

Abstract:

I shall describe the R language package "spatstat," developed by Adrian Baddeley and myself for analyzing spatial point pattern data. The package provides a wide range of functionality, including facilities for the creation, manipulation and plotting of point patterns; exploratory data analysis using summary functions such as the F, G, and K, and J functions; simulation of point process models; and the fitting of parametric models to data via maximum pseudolikelihood. The models may be of a very general Gibbs/Markov form, and are specified in the package by a formula expressed in the syntax of the S/R language. They are fitted using a single function mpl analogous to the function glm used to fit generalized linear models. The package can handle realistic point patterns with features including marks, spatial covariates, observation windows of arbitrary shape, and inhomogeneity or trend. The package facilitates the application of modern statistical techniques and encourages sound statistical practices such as model critique and experimentation with competing models. I will demonstrate some of the features of spatstat and its use in the (re)analysis of some well known datasets.
