Abstract #301999

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

Starting from the normal distribution, we derive a two-parameter probability distribution. This probability distribution has been noticed as a higher parameter probability distribution in the literature. Applications and the importance of this distribution has been fully overlooked due to the complexities arising with this higher parameter distribution. The hazard function of this two-parameter family consists of many shapes including the bathtub shapes, which is a very rare property for a two-parameter family. This probability distribution fits very well with many real data sets that were published in literature, in particular the Weibull types data. In fact, for bathtub-type data, this distribution provides a much better fit than any other known two-parameter distributions.
