Abstract:

We now have the capability to collect and store huge amounts of data. However, our capacity to store data has quickly outstripped our ability to analyze it. Analysts and researchers often find that getting data is still difficult, and analysis of large datasets often fails to yield results. And yet, the amount of data collected by businesses grows exponentially, despite the high cost involved. Clearly, someone must be using large datasets effectively. Over the past decade, something new has happened: we have seen the emergence of enterprise data. Enterprise data and its research implications will be the focus of this document. We will characterize successful large analytical databases based on the experiences of the private sector. We will argue that these databases are truly different and revolutionary, and identify new paradigms embodied by them. We will identify opportunities for research, and describe the path forward.
