Abstract:

This talk studies linear trend rates in high and low temperatures recorded in the contiguous 48 United States over the last 150 years. Comparisons of trends computed from extreme value and regression-based methods will be given. Methods for handling station location moves at known times (changepoints) will be discussed. Spatial contour maps of the annual warming/cooling rates were constructed via the nonparametric head-banging algorithm; these rates are partitioned into seasonal trends for spring, summer, fall, and winter.
