Abstract:

We discuss and compare the most important software packages for statistics teaching, consulting, and research. Various comparison criteria are developed, and possible improvements and future developments are discussed. We evaluate the merits of commercial and noncommercial software, and we give some suggestions about areas that developers of packages should concentrate on.
