Abstract #301946

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: Asymptotic Equivalence of Experiments: An Appreciation
Author(s): David Donoho*+
Companies: Stanford University
Address: Department of Statistics, Stanford, CA, 94305,
Keywords: statistical experiments ; asymptotic theory ; decision theory
Abstract:

Lucien Le Cam left behind many friends whom he affected by his warmth, simplicity, and kindness, and, at the same time, an imposing intellectual edifice: asymptotic equivalence of experiments. I will try to convey some notion of the basic ideas behind asymptotic equivalence of experiments, its birth as a tool for justifying Fisher's notion of information, its high points in parametric inference, and its subsequent development in ways Le Cam apparently did not anticipate; for example, in understanding optimal nonparametric smoothers. I will try to credit some of the many researchers who came under the spell of Le Cam's ideas and made contributions to our modern viewpoint.
