Abstract #301894

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: Using the Data Image for Graphical Analysis

Abstract:

The color histogram was first introduced as a tool for visualizing high-dimensional data by Wegman. A new version of this concept, called a data image, will be discussed. Each variable is transformed into a greyscale or color range so that a high-dimensional data set may be viewed as an image, with observations on one axis and variables on the other. The rows and columns of the image may be rearranged to highlight relationships between observations and variables. New ways of displaying the image based on various linear orderings of a data set and the ability of the data image to show relationships between variables and clusters will be explored. A Java applet that may be used to construct an interactive data image via the internet will be the basis for this exploration.
