Abstract:

Carnegie Mellon University is developing a web-based learning environment as an alternative to, or supplement for, a large lecture format introductory-level statistics course. There are several challenges and opportunities with developing such a learning environment; some of which are general to web-based learning design and some of which are specific to the domain of statistics. The course design is a result of collaboration among several statistics faculty, cognitive scientist and experts in human computer interaction. The paper will present the challenges, opportunities, and innovations of creating a web-based statistics learning environment, some highlights from the discourse about statistics and teaching statistics that the collaborative process brought forth, and the results of the pilot of using the web-based learning environment to teach EDA.
