Abstract:

A number of orderings of the outcome space have been proposed for the analysis of data collected using a group sequential stopping rule. It is not entirely clear what criteria should be used to evaluate these orderings. Some of the criteria which have been proposed include the average width of confidence intervals (CI), the bias of median unbiased estimators (Emerson & Fleming 1990), the tendency for Cis to include common point estimates (Tsiatis, Rosner & Mehta 1984), the equality of coverage errors above and below the CI (Rosner & Tsiatis 1988), the tendency to produce small p values under alternatives (Chang et al. 1995), and, most recently, the potential for agreement with the likelihood principle (Cook 2002). We review and expand comparisons among several orderings, focusing on the foundational issues involved in the criteria.
