Title: Estimation of Genetic Variance Components for Sexual Dimorphism in a Microarray Study of D. melanogaster

Abstract:

We describe the analysis of a microarray study using isogenic lines from a natural population and all possible combinations of these lines. This classic design is known as a diallel. Reciprocal crosses between lines allow estimation of genetic variance components, including dominance and maternal effects. We compare genetic variation for sexually differentiated gene expression to global estimates of genetic variation for expression. We examine the efficiency of estimation in the full diallel, to several different partial diallel designs and present a SAS macro that can be used in any partial diallel design to estimate genetic variance components. Examples of sexually dimorphic characters in Drosophila include ovariole number, body size, development time, pre-adult viability, leg bristle, sex comb teeth number, abdominal pigmentation area, pharmaceutical (nicotine, caffeine and monoamine) susceptibility, age-specific adult mortality, and sperm precedence. Sexual dimorphism in the expression of these characters evolved only recently in the melanogaster species group, and pronounced differences are often seen within and between closely related species.
