Abstract:

The need for handling a large number of variables in aerospace applications arises in numerous engineering disciplines where computationally expensive simulation models are used for designing complex systems. Modeling of these systems often involves several hundreds of design parameters that a designer may want to vary during the design process. In addition, optimization on such systems often involves multiple objectives, subject to many linear and nonlinear constraints. While the use of surrogate models (metamodels) in the preliminary design stages has been very effective at overcoming the computational expense of the disciplinary computer simulation models, the use has been limited to applications that typically involve less than 100 design variables. We summarize some approaches that can be used to reduce the dimensionality of a problem and evaluate the feasibility of these approaches in practical applications.
