Abstract:

Maintaining a dietary supplement product database is a complex problem. In 1994 it was estimated that over 4,000 dietary supplements were on the market. Since then, the number of products has expanded dramatically. Individual supplements can contain as many as 60 ingredients. The dietary supplement database of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, NHANES, serves two functions: (1) to compile detailed information on all the dietary supplement products that are reported in NHANES and (2) to provide an updated product list for future data collection. In 1999 NHANES implemented a change from periodic data collection to continuous data collection that has had implications for all components of the survey. For dietary supplements the continuous data collection has necessitated more vigorous maintenance of the product database. This involves tracking frequent changes to products and creating default products that are used to assign values for observations with missing strengths or incomplete information. To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of data collection, on a yearly basis interviewers are provided with an updated product list generated from the database.
