Abstract:

To off-load time-consuming classroom demonstrations and to improve the accessibility of learning resources, we have developed tutorials and practice modules for the teaching of basic statistical computational skills using Microsoft EXCEL. The lessons consist of a series of animated screen captures (.avi files) of key strokes, with voice-over and written instructions, augmented by remarks and commentary. In this way, we can effectively deliver statistical education in a web-based format using a variety of media to address different individuals' learning styles. The animated sequences are produced and synthesized using SnagIt, Lectora, and Flash, and the product is web-accessed by students using Blackboard. While its application was intended to facilitate acceleration of our basic MBA statistics course, the web lessons are appropriate for teaching all elementary statistics courses.
