Title: The Trends and Distribution of Mortality from Heart Diseases as Reflected on ICD-9 and ICD-10

Abstract:

NCHS has implemented ICD-10 for U.S. resident death registrations with the 1999 data year and completed coding 2000 mortality data. The World Health Organization adopted ICD-10 that replaces the ICD-9 used since 1979. Whether the new codes are adequately prepared to maintain the continuity in recording diseases is yet to be tested. The existence or nonexistence of continuity can be tested by comparing trends of age-adjusted death rates from heart diseases that will be calculated using death registration data for three 2-year periods: 1995-1996, 1997-1998, and 1999-2000. Population data for the corresponding years are available from the Bureau of Census. The rates will be analyzed using F tests to check variations between two periods using the same version of ICD codes and different versions of ICD codes. Trends between years' geographic and demographic factors will also be checked by general linear models. The results will also be illustrated by Health Service Area with ArcGIS 8 mapping software.
