Abstract #301660

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: Pooled Sample Screening with Quality Control

Keywords: prevalence ; Bayesian approach ; sensitivity ; HIV testing ; diagnostic test
Abstract:

We propose a useful protocol and develop corresponding statistical methodology for the problem of screening populations for low prevalence characteristics such as HIV or drugs. For example, current screening for HIV involves testing individual blood units with an inexpensive ELISA test, followed by a more accurate Western blot test for only ELISA positive units. Our proposed strategy involves testing pooled samples both to save money and to enhance current methods by making it possible to accurately estimate the sensitivity of the initial screening test, and the prevalences of the characteristic in (i) the population at large and (ii) the population of screened units.
