Abstract:

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and Statistics Canada (STC), national statistical agencies in the United States and Canada, respectively, are jointly conducting a one-time, bi-national health survey. Telephone calls were placed to both countries from Canadian telephone centers. One adult from each contacted household was interviewed. The questionnaire could be administered in English, Spanish, or French. The number of respondents was about 5,000 in the U.S. and 3,500 in Canada. The same survey questions were used in both countries. This project arose as part of the agencies' efforts to increase the comparability of questions on ongoing U.S. and Canadian health surveys: the National Health Interview Survey conducted by NCHS, and the National Population Health Survey and Canadian Community Health Survey conducted by STC. The questions on the joint survey were taken verbatim from these surveys. Analysts will compare data from the U.S. portion of the joint survey to data from the Canadian portion, and they will compare joint survey data to data from the same questions on the ongoing surveys. This talk will provide some early analytic results.
