Abstract:

This presentation summarizes current NCHS/CDC recommendations in regard to estimation of sampling errors and publication criteria for the current data release of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2000). Because the sample size (9,284 respondents to the Medical Examination) and the number of Primary Sample Units (26 PSU's in the two-year period) are both small, a number of statistical concerns must be addressed. Due to confidentiality concerns, no PSU information can be given on a public use microdata file. A jackknife technique based on 52 replicates is used to estimate sampling errors. This presentation examines the potential need for a correction factor for the jackknife, provides recommendations for estimating the degrees of freedom for the sampling errors, and explores possible ways to use software for survey data analysis that cannot use the jackknife technique (for example, STATA). The issue of degrees of freedom and stability of the estimates of sampling error also impacts previously used publication criteria. Recommendations for a more general approach to publication criteria are presented.
