Abstract:

The noncompliance problem in randomized clinical trials is at the heart of the intention-to-treat (ITT) framework and is attracting substantial attention recently. However, the focus is limited to dichotomous classification of compliance behavior, which is often not the case in reality. We extend the description of compliance behavior from all-or-none treatment compliance defined by Imbens and Rubin (1997) to a trichotomous classification of full-partial-none compliance. In addition to complier average causal effect), we define none-to-partial-complier average causal effect and partial-to-full-complier average causal effect based on the framework of the Rubin causal model. Our discussion focuses on randomized trials with a binary treatment assignment. We apply our new methodology to a breastfeeding promotion intervention trial to evaluate the impact of full and partial breastfeeding on infant infectious outcomes.
