Abstract:

Many surveys are being carried out using web-based designs. There are many factors that influence the response rates, and hence the nonresponse bias in such studies. We put forward some conjectures about the possible effects of some factors on the response rates observed in some surveys carried out at James Madison University using online questionnaire forms. In these surveys the randomly selected students are sent email messages requesting participation and a link to the questionnaire. The findings of this study will be used for designing an experiment for testing the effects of some of the factors that are thought to influence response rates, hoping to develop suggestions to reduce some of the nonsampling errors in web-based surveys.
