Abstract:

Computer-based queries of geospatial data sets have become common with the vast amount of spatial data available to users. In most situations, the quality measures associated with the original data are not incorporated into to the query process, and accuracy for the data generated in response to the query is not reported. We explore methods and the level of information needed to generate new accuracy measures for two possible computer-based queries for a land cover map. The queries addressed are (1) generating a new map that represents a subregion of the original map, and (2) generating a new map with one or more sets of land cover classes collapsed to form broader land cover categories than the original set of classes. Results are illustrated using the thematic accuracy assessment data for a portion of Iowa's GAP Analysis Project (GAP) land cover map.
