Abstract:

In the past three years we have been actively involved in redesigning our first-level high-enrollment courses in statistics, including (a) statistical literacy (1000 students/year), (b) introductory statistics (2500 students, mostly from the social and behavioral sciences), © biostatistics (425 students), and (d) engineering statistics (750 students). In each restructured course, we have transferred responsibility for learning to the students and provided hands-on, collaborative group work in one or two computer labs each week. In this presentation we will describe some of the key ingredients of these redesigned courses that we believe have been highly successful, with increased student performance and satisfaction.
